The bridge that collapsed did not fall under NHAI's jurisdiction but the authority has decided to take action to check its own structures.

NHAI has asked its field units to ensure that the fitness of all of its old bridges is checked by inspections arranged through project directors, independent engineers or consultants.

More than 20 bodies have been recovered following the collapse of the bridge at Mahad, though there are fears that the death toll will rise to 42. There had been sustained heavy flooding over a number of days prior to the collapse, which resulted in two buses and a car falling into the river and being swept away.
