Flatiron and its designer RK&K will work on the design during this year, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2018.

The Rodanthe Bridge project is the second phase of the overall Bonner Bridge replacement.

The US$145m project features a 3.9km bridge that will extend from the southern end of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, over the Pamlico Sound and into the village of Rodanthe. The future bridge will replace the existing NC 12 road and provide a long-term solution for a breach caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011.

Project completion is expected in April 2020.
