A 67t bridge for a coast-to-coast cycleway was lifted into position in northern England at the weekend. The 60m-long single span bow string arched structure was lifted by a 1000t crane. It was too big for transport in one piece and so arrived from Mandall Engineering's Sheffield factory in several sections ready for welding on site. The bridge works have been supervised throughout by Durham County Council and are being carried out by Lumsden & Carroll Construction. Pedestrians will be able to use the US$1.9 million bridge, as well as cyclists on the Sustrans Coast to Coast route.
