Work started yesterday on the 2.4km Pelješac Bridge, a cable-stayed bay crossing that will connect the Croatian peninsula of Pelješac with the mainland. A consortium of Konstruktor, Viadukt and Hidroelektra is building the US$378 million scheme. However, the project is controversial as Bosnia believes it may violate its territorial waters.

Bosnia & Herzegovina (BiH) presidency member Dr Haris Silajdžic has issued a statement in response to the start of construction, saying that it is not contributing to good relations with Croatia and complicates the situation involving the sea border. "Bosnia & Herzegovina is not objecting to the Croatian sovereign right to connect parts of its territory, but it cannot be done in a manner that violates the rights and interests of BiH."
