A project to strengthen the 114 year old Hammersmith Bridge in London has won a 2001 historic bridge award from the UK's Institution of Civil Engineers. Designer Hyder Consulting, contractor J Murphy & Sons, and the client London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, collected the award despite initial controversy about the closure of the bridge to private vehicles during the strengthening. The bridge, which is one of the main arteries into and out of West London, is now fully cleared for use by private vehicles up to 7.5t weight, single deck buses and emergency vehicles.
