A planning inspector has given permission for construction of the Milton Creek Bridge in Kent in southern England following a public inquiry in July. The next step is to appoint a contractor with a view to work starting on site in 2009.

The US$63 million bridge will provide access to an industrial estate as well as relieving traffic congestion in Sittingbourne. Construction is expected to take about two years.

Opponents had maintained that the bridge would be too low over the creek and had called for an opening structure but the argument was rejected.
