Consultant Maunsell has won a contract to carry out annual inspections of critical elements of Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge in Saltash, UK, as part of Railtrack Great Western's management and maintenance programme. The inspections will be restricted to the two lenticular truss main spans. Each span is 139m long and has 30m clearance above the River Tamar. To restrict the necessary possession time the inspections will be performed using abseiling techniques.
