The governor of the US state of Massachusetts has highlighted early successes in a US$3 billion, eight year accelerated programme to reduce the backlog of structurally-deficient bridges. Deval Patrick said that 13 bridge projects have been completed in less than two years with 62 more beginning or continuing in the upcoming construction season.
At least 200 bridge projects will be completed during the eight-year programme. The total value of projects advertised to date exceeds US$472 million.
There has also been progress in reducing the time from advertising construction contracts to starting work, from 218 days in 2008 to 124 days in 2009. Techniques such as design-build and precast construction are being used to complete projects more quickly and with less disruption.
