The Borough of Poole in southern England has announced that a number of small issues need to be resolved before the Twin Sails Bridge can be opened to traffic.
The lifting bridge was due to have been opened vehicle and pedestrian use by now. The council held events this weekend that were billed as the official celebrations for the new bridge. The event on 9 March featured the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra performing the world premiere of a new piece of music celebrating bridge.
The bridge's triangular lifting leaves symbolise the sails of a yacht, in recognition of the town's maritime heritage. Contractor for the scheme was Hochtief to a design by Gifford (now part of Ramboll) and Wilkinson Eyre.
