Malaysia and Bangladesh have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge.

The bridge will be built by a Malaysian consortium, with construction due to start this year and take 54 months.

Under the MoU, the Malaysian government will form a consortium of Malaysian companies to take on a build, operate, own and transfer concession for the US$2.9 billion project.

The bridge will connect south-western Bangladesh to the rest of the country.
