Part of a key motorway viaduct in London is to be closed for several days while urgent repairs are made following the discovery of new cracking.
Repairs to the Boston Manor Viaduct on the M4 motorway were entering the final stages when the new crack was found in a highly stressed zone over the bridge supports. There was already a weight restriction in place but the Highways Agency took the decision to close the structure completely for several days while a solution is implemented.
The road is closed in both directions between junctions 2 and 3. The section between junctions 1 and 2 had also been closed on Friday but has since been reopened, with the remainder expected to reopen on Thursday.
The Highways Agency said that it expected the ongoing programme of repairs will be completed to enable the viaduct to operate in its full capacity in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games later this month.
