Mott MacDonald has been appointed as lead contractor’s designer for the 9.4km-long viaduct section of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

The appointment follows last month’s award of the HK$12.867 billion design and build contract to a Dragages-China Harbour-VSL joint venture

Mott MacDonald will design substantial sections of the viaduct, as well as being responsible overall for geotechnical, highways, electrical and mechanical, utilities, and other civil engineering services.

The bridge will support a dual three-lane carriageway over the Pearl River Estuary. It will be formed from prestressed concrete box sections and built using the balanced cantilever method.

“This is a fantastic project for Mott MacDonald in Asia and we are proud to be part of the joint venture’s team,” said Mott MacDonald transport division manager in Hong Kong, Dr Mark Swales.
