The foundation stone for a bridge to link Gambia and Senegal is set to be laid this month following the signing of an agreement between the two countries.

A section of cross-border road will also be rehabilitated as part of the project.

The Gambia River currently lacks a fixed connection across it. The current service is by ferry and the road links are poor, with problems compounded by lengthy and costly customs procedures.

The African Development Bank had announced in December that it would be providing US$107.4 million in funding for the scheme.
