The US city of Salem is to allocate an additional US$3 million for the Minto Island Bridge project with the aim of increasing competitiveness of future grant applications.
Almost US$2 million has already been committed to support project to build a cycle and pedestrian bridge together with an asssociated trail. A further US$6.2 million is needed for the bridge and US$800,000 for the trail.
Feedback from funding applications has suggested that the funding gap is currently too large to secure grants and so the city's Urban Renewal Agency has decided to put forward the additional money.
OBEC Consulting Engineers was appointed through a competitive process to complete the bridge design, perform studies, and apply for permits. Initial surveying, site investigations and conceptual design were completed this summer. The next design phase will conclude in April 2013.
