A new bridge developed by Figg Bridge opened yesterday in the US state of Virginia.

The South Norfolk Jordan Bridge replaces an old lift bridge that was closed to traffic in 2008. In January 2009, Chesapeake City Council approved plans submitted by Figg Bridge Developers for a 100% privately funded replacement crossing.

The new 1.6km bridge has a  44m vertical navigational clearance in the channel, which has avoided the need for a lift span.

It has been developed as a toll bridge, but is in use free of charge during the current weather conditions that have prompted a state of emergency in the eastern USA.
