Consulting engineer Gifford and Wilkinson Eyre Architects have won a prestigious German award, the Balthasar Neumann Preis 2004, for the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. The award recognises outstanding works of collaboration between architects and engineers and was presented to the design team at a ceremony in Wurzburg, Germany, on 25 June. The Balthasar Neumann Preis is awarded by the League of German Master Builders, Architects and Engineers and German Building Magazine. The prize is awarded every two years and was first issued in 1994. The jury's assessment said the bridge won the award 'for demonstrating a triumph of collaborative achievement between architects and engineers in the true spirit of Balthasar Neumann'.
