NEWS / Rhode Island readies for bridge floatation

Rhode Island Department of Transportation has announced that the new Providence River Bridge's main span will be floated to site this month. The 122m-long steel arch is the signature structure on a scheme to relocate part of the I-195 highway. The bridge will be loaded onto barges and taken from Quonset to Providence where it is due to be positioned on 24 and 25 August. Assembly began in October 2005 and the new section of road is expected to be opened to traffic by the end of 2007.
