The US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has awarded US$1.15 million to the Virginia Department of Transportation under the FHWA's Innovative Bridge Research & Construction Program. Old timber bridges at Tangier Island will be replaced by structures with steel trusses and fibre-reinforced polymer decks. Precast full-width full-depth prestressed concrete deck panels will be used to speed construction on a new bridge on Route 16, while self-compacting concrete will be used in the drilled shafts supporting a new structure on Route 28.
