Change announced in Peace Bridge design

Peace Bridge

The Peace Bridge will now be built to Figg Engineering's design.

Environmental considerations have led to the 173m-high two-tower cable-stayed design proposed for the new Peace Bridge being dropped in favour of a lower-profile arched scheme.

Christian Menn’s cable-stayed design had been chosen two and a half years ago for the international bridge between Buffalo in the USA and Fort Erie in Canada. A review by the Federal Highways Authority has now determined that the height would have unacceptable impacts on migratory birds and the protected common tern. Others had also expressed concerns and a decision has now been taken to advance a lower-profile three-span arch concept that was developed by Figg Engineering Group. This had been a finalist when the original decision was taken.

“From the outset the Peace Bridge Authority was committed to doing the best possible bridge design with community consensus”, said chairman Paul Koessler. “We are disappointed that we cannot do the chosen design but the environmental process ultimately dictates what we can and cannot do.”

Design co-chairs Dr Robert Shibley and Dr Ted Ogilvie complimented the work of the design jury. “The jury did an excellent job in selecting the best possible design given the information provided. While we are disappointed the chosen design cannot proceed I am pleased that the three span arch, one of the finalists, is now being advanced”, said Shibley.

Construction is due to begin in late 2009.
