Hangzhou Bay Bridge opens

The record-breaking sea crossing of Hangzou Bay in eastern China opened to traffic today after the final link was placed last year. The 36km-long Hangzou Bay Bridge has main cable-stayed spans of 448m and 318m. Construction began in June 2003. Lorries and vehicles carrying dangerous chemicals will be barred during an initial trial period to ensure smooth operation. |
