Upgrade starts at iconic UK interchange
Published:  May 13, 2008

The Highways Agency started work yesterday on a US$8 million project to repair concrete columns and supporting crossbeams at Gravelly Hill Interchange - better known as Spaghetti Junction - in Birmingham, England. The 17-month project involves reinforcing eight bridge deck supports and several columns at the interchange on the M6 motorway.

Spaghetti Junction opened 36 years ago and carries more than 160,000 vehicles a day. Work will take place below the deck to avoid carriageway closures. The work is being carried out for the Highways Agency by managing agent contractor Amey Mouchel.
