Milestone reached in Shanghai crossing
Published:  June 30, 2008

A key part of the US$2 billion Yangtze River Tunnel & Bridge project was completed in Shanghai, China, on Friday. Major engineering work on the 10.3km bridge section from Changxing to Chongming Island and the 8.9km tunnel section are now finished.

The whole 25.5km project is expected to be operating in 2010. It will take only 45 minutes to travel from Pudong to Chongming, saving at least an hour.

The bridge has a projected life span of 100 years. "The piers can withstand a large ship colliding with them and the structure can cope with gales up to 133 kilometers an hour and an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale," said director of the headquarters' bridge department Guo Zhenwen.
