Sutong Bridge opens

The record-breaking Sutong Bridge was formally opened on Monday in east China's Jiangsu Province after five years of construction. The cable-stayed bridge’s main span of 1,088m is the world's longest and its steel and concrete towers stand 300.4m high.

The US$1.15 billion bridge, which links the cities of Nantong and Suzhou, is 32.4km long with 8,146m spanning the Yangtze River. It had undergone a month-long trail with daily flows of 20,000 to 30,000 vehicles before Monday's opening ceremony .

Main contractor for the project was 2nd Navigation Engineering Bureau and Maunsell Consultants Asia was the contractor's engineering consultant.
