Golden Gate suicide barrier scheme moves forward
Published: July 09, 2008
Five options for suicide prevention measures on the Golden Gate Bridge have been outlined in an environmental impact report published this week. Wind tunnel testing has shown that all of the alternatives would require the addition of some form of device to counter instabilities induced by high winds. Barrier options include raising the pedestrian rail to a height of about 4m and installing nets. Two kinds of device have been explored to mitigate the wind effects for the different options. Fairings are curved elements placed at two locations below the walkway on the top chord of the west stiffening truss while a winglet is a curved element placed above the walkway at the top of the proposed barrier system. Costs of the project are put at between US$40 million and US$50 million. An estimated 1,300 people have committed suicide by jumping from the bridge since its opening in 1937, and there were 39 suicides last year alone. |
