River Tyne gets 8th crossing
Published: July 16, 2008
A new suspension bridge was completed today spanning the River Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead - though it is only temporary. The 120m bamboo crossing has been built by Australian firm Bambuco as part of a weekend music and arts festival. It is made of some 800 bamboo poles and has 25m-high towers at either end. It took 25 days to build and was completed several days ahead of schedule. Bambuco has previously built large-scale bamboo structures in cities including London, Berlin, Moscow, Melbourne and Singapore. The latest project used 20t of sustainable bamboo imported from China. |
