Bratislava bridge to be rebuilt
Published: July 24, 2008
A 118-year-old bridge in the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, is to be rebuilt at a cost of some US$53 million dollars. The Starého mosta - Old Bridge - fails to meet today's shipping and road transport requirements. The new bridge will be doubled in width to 34m, the piers will be further apart and the height will be increased to allow the passage of ships. Some 26,000 members of the public have voted on the three options, with more than 11,000 favouring variant 'B' (pictured). The bridge design includes provision for a new fast tram line that is due for completion in 2011. |
