Hyder team wins Auckland competition
Published: August 20, 2008
A design by Hyder Consulting, Denton Corker Marshall Design and Kenneth Grubb & Associates has been chosen for the Te Wero Bridge in Auckland, New Zealand. The dramatic bridge will have twin opening leaves. The judging panel noted that the profile of the opening leaves reflected yacht hulls and that the mast will create a landmark, which could be illuminated for special events. The deck splits in two as it rises, with the leaves sweeping apart to come to rest in a 'V' configuration. The vertical tower will create a permanent gateway feature to mark the crossing point regardless of whether the bridge is open or closed. A longer, broader south leaf will carry the two passenger transport lanes, while the north leaf is exclusively for pedestrians and cycles
A swing bridge, designed by a team from Wilkinson Eyre and Beca, was highly commended by the judging panels for its elegant design. |
