Alfords Point Bridge comes in on time and under budget
Published:  August 22, 2008

The Alfords Point Bridge duplication project in Sydney, Australia, has been completed on time and under budget and opened to traffic today. Abigroup was contractor for the project, which came in 7% under budget at US$36.7 million.

"This new bridge will provide relief to motorists in southern Sydney and improve traffic flow in the growing Menai region," said premier Premier Morris Iemma at yesterday's official opening ceremony.

It sits to the east of the existing Alfords Point Bridge and is 445m long and 15.3m wide. The original structure will carry northbound traffic over the Georges River while the new one will cater to southbound motorists.

The bridge took 850 people and 240,000 hours to build. It incorporates 5,900 cubic metres of concrete, 3,900 cubic metres of asphalt and 1,000t of steel, said roads minister Eric Roozendaal.

Tenders for the northern approach to Alfords Point Bridge, including a duplicate bridge over Henry Lawson Drive, will be called before the end of this year.
