Nine killed in viaduct collapse
Published: May 19, 2009
A section of a viaduct that was due for demolition has collapsed killing nine people and injuring 16 in China's Hunan province. The 200m-long section, which was supported by eight piers, collapsed on Sunday afternoon in the city of Zhuzhou. The 2.75km-long, 8m-high viaduct came into use in 1995 and was to be demolished tomorrow as part of a scheme to improve traffic flows. Local reports say that a trial explosion had taken place last week close to the site of the collapse. |
