Coast Guard publishes Goethals Bridge environmental statement
Published:  May 29, 2009

The US Coast Guard is inviting comments on the draft environmental impact statement for the proposed replacement of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Goethals Bridge across the Arthur Kill between Staten Island and Elizabeth.

There are four alternatives, involving new and existing alignments to the south or north of the existing 80-year-old steel truss bridge. The alternatives share a single design concept: one cable-stayed bridge with two roadway decks that are separated by two towers and sufficient space to accommodate a potential future transit service.

The closing date for comments is 28 July.
