Hood Canal Bridge opens ahead of schedule
Published:  June 05, 2009

The upgraded Hood Canal Bridge in the US state of Washington has opened to traffic, eight days ahead of schedule. Celebrations are planned for tomorrow.

Reopening of what is believed to be the world's longest floating bridge over seawater follows 20 successful successive cycles of the drawspan operation earlier this week.

The US$500 million project has involved replacing part of the 2.4km bridge, including the eastern floating portion. The bridge has been closed to traffic for a few weeks to allow the old pontoons to be replaced with the new ones.
