Rhyl Harbour Bridge

Gifford's design has been picked for the new Rhyl Harbour Bridge.

Transport charity Sustrans, Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh Assembly Government have unveiled the design for a US$6.4 million new crossing of the River Clwyd at Rhyl's Foryd Harbour and appointed the design and build team that will create it.

The contract has been awarded to the North Wales arm of the Swansea-based contractor Dawnus, in association with the Chester office of design engineer Gifford.

Five companies had been invited to pitch to design and build the bridge, which will span 80m. The winning concept has a nautical design, which will lift the two lightweight walkways in two halves around a central mast to allow boats to pass.

Work on site is scheduled for early 2011 and should be completed within six months as much of the fabrication will take place off site, reducing any disruption to the harbour.
