Chile announces new plans for Chacao bridge
Published:  June 16, 2009

Chile's public works minister Sergio Bitar has announced a revival of proposals for a 2.6km bridge over the Chacao channel to link the mainland and the island of Chiloé.

The original suspension bridge proposal was cancelled in 2006 when costs rose to some US$950 million. Chile's government brought in international bridge expertise to re-examine the project and Spanish engineer Javier Manterola Armisén has produced the current proposal for a cable-stayed design.

The intention is for the new scheme to cost 20% less than the original design. Construction would be unlikely to start before 2013.
