Germany gives green light to Fehmarnbelt link
Published: June 19, 2009
The German parliament gave its backing yesterday to the 19km sea link across the Fehmarbelt to Denmark although there was some opposition to the scheme. Denmark's parliament had approved the proposal almost unanimously in March. Construction of the 19km crossing is due to begin in 2012. A cable-stayed bridge is the preferred option and its design is being developed by a joint venture of Cowi and Obermeyer. Options have also been kept open for a tunnel, whose design being developed by a joint venture of Rambøll, Arup and TEC. Most of the US$6.2 billion project costs will be met by Denmark. |
