Bay Bridge deck segments set sail from China
Published:  January 05, 2010

A cargo ship has left China's Zhenhua Heavy Industry Company carrying the first eight deck sections of the self-anchored suspension span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

The shipment of more than 5,000t of steel marks three years of work in Shanghai on behalf of American Bridge/Fluor to fabricate 28 triangular steel deck sections along with the bridge's signature steel tower.

The ship set sail amid celebrations on 30 December, just beating a 31 December deadline for the first shipment. It will be followed by regular shipments of both tower and deck sections this year and into 2011.
