HNTB's modified network tied arch design has been chosen for the new Lake Champlain Bridge.

The governors of the US states of Vermont and New York have announced the selection of a modified network tied arch concept as the preferred choice to replace the Lake Champlain Bridge.

The design, by HNTB, was also the overwhelming favourite of local people.

The original bridge was demolished in December after inspections had shown it to be unsafe.

The new bridge will have a basket handle arch with a network cable arrangement and internally redundant box tie girders supporting a composite precast deck system.

Design work will begin immediately. Construction of the new bridge is slated to start in spring, with completion expected by late summer 2011. Vermont and New York will share the approximately US$75 million costs of construction.
