Three concepts have been released for a new harbour crossing in Whangarei.

Whangarei District Council in New Zealand has annouced details of its plans for a new crossing of the Hatea River, saying that the bridge will feature a design with an eye-catching mix of history, culture and industry. The council has released preliminary concepts featuring steel and wood options.

The harbour bridge will have a section that tilts up to allow yachts to pass.

The council sees the project as a unique opportunity to provide a "signature" bridge. "The bridge is the gateway not only to the Town Basin, but to an area rich in Maori history and folklore,” said councillor Phil Halse. "Our bridge can tell the story of the history of the area, and also of the present Northland economy.”

Three preliminary options have been released featuring steel and wood elements to showcase either Whangarei's reputation for steel work, or alternatively the forestry industry.

Halse said that incorporating one of the designs into the bridge's construction could still fit within the US$25 million budget for the project.

"This is a one-off opportunity to create a lasting landmark out of a piece of the transportation network. We can create something very special which will have spin-offs in community pride and tourism far beyond its value as a bridge," said councillor Crichton Christie.

The council plans to lodge consent applications for the bridge next week, obtain those consents by May and to have the bridge opened by September next year.
