New funding pledges bring South Park Bridge replacement closer
Published: July 23, 2010
Replacement of the South Park Bridge in Washington State, USA, moved closer this week with the announcement of two new tranches of pledged funding totalling US$18 million. In total, US$98 million of the US$131 million required is now available for the King County project. New federal funding of US$3 million was announced this week and Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) said that it will add US$15 million to the money it has already pledged. The latest money from PSRC is targetted at demolition of the existing 80-year-old opening bridge, which closed permanently on 30 June because of extensive structural problems.
King County had applied for, but did not receive, a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant to fund the new bridge. It now hopes to secure funding under the next round of TIGER funding. “Every dollar pledged gets us that much closer to a winning application for the federal TIGER II grant,” said Metropolitan King County council member Jan Drago. |
