Denver Airport unveils Calatrava bridge design
Published: July 30, 2010
Santiago Calatrava's design for a signature rail bridge at Denver International Airport was unveiled yesterday. The bridge is part of the US$650 million redevelopment of the US airport's south terminal, which includes a new rail station to provide a link to the city centre. The Peña Boulevard rail crossing, which will be built 2.4km west of the airport, is designed as a tied arch structure. The box girder deck is hung from the single arch by cables and supports flanking orthotropic decks on steel ribs. The bridge marks the symbolic entry to the airport and the arch motif is echoed elsewhere in Calatrava’s design for the south terminal project. Parsons Transportation Group is the programme manager. MA Mortenson is construction manager/general contractor, with Kiewit carrying out the same role on the enabling works. |
