East China's Zhejiang Province has approved construction of a second major structure over the Hangzhou Bay.

Construction is already under way of a record-breaking 36km crossing over the bay. Work started in June on the US$1.4 billion bridge which will shorten the journey between Shanghai and Ningbo by 120 kilometres.

The second bridge will run 13.6 km over the bay, and will save 100km on the journey between Shanghai and Shangyu. The cost is put at US$720 million, and work is expected to start next year.
