Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau have agreed to set up a joint co-ordination group to examine the landmark project. Hong Kong’s chief executive Tung Chee Hwa announced that the group will study the hydrology, environmental protection, economic benefits and routing of the bridge.

He added that the bridge is crucial for Hong Kong's future development and that it is important to undertake the preparatory work as soon as possible. The co-ordination group will hold its first meeting on August 30. Each jurisdiction will nominate three representatives to take part and all costs incurred will be split equally. Results of the study will be submitted to the central government.
