Messina bidders to be named next month
Published:  September 23, 2004

Stretto di Messina has achieved its target of attracting five potential bidders for the record-breaking Messina Bridge project. Their identities will be disclosed next month when the formal bidding documents are sent out following the vetting of the prequalification proposals.

The five members of the commission to examine the prequalification proposals have now been named. The commission is chaired by the Council of State president Renato Laschena and includes Stretto di Messina’s chief technical officer Giuseppe Fiammenghi.

The road and rail bridge over the Strait of Messina will be the longest single span suspension bridge in the world with a central span of 3.3km. Cost of the bridge and its links is put at US$5.57 billion. Work is due to start on site next year.
