Peter Head to run Arup urban design business
Published:  November 16, 2004

Peter Head is joining Arup from Fabermaunsell to lead a newly integrated business in urban design and development.

His early remit at Arup will be to create a team approach to deliver a new level of practice in sustainable development. This will draw together development planning, economics and policy; urban/transport interchange design and masterplanning; transport and environmental consulting; and sustainable development.

Arup director and chairman of Arup’s global consulting sector John Miles welcomed the move and praised Head's experience, pointing out that he is a commissioner for the London Sustainable Development Commission and has just been reappointed by the Mayor until 2008. "He has been leading the development of a practical approach to delivering the ambitious London Development Plan sustainability objectives," said Miles.

The move comes into effect on 1 December. "“I intend to help Arup define a fresh approach to urban development for schemes across the world which will enable us to meet the many challenges we increasingly confront," said Head. "These include climate change, high costs of infrastructure investment, and the need for affordable housing."

Head worked at Fabermaunsell for 24 years, most recently as corporate development director. He was awarded the OBE for services to bridge engineering in 1998, when he also received the IABSE Award of Merit for an outstanding contribution to the global construction industry.
