Published:  December 01, 2004

One man was killed and three injured yesterday when a supporting structure collapsed at the Four Bears Bridge, under construction across Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota. The US Occupational Safety & Health Administration is investigating the accident.

The 15 span, 1280m precast concrete segmental structure is being built using the balanced cantilever method.

The project has been sponsored by North Dakota Department of Transportation and the the Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara Nation to improve access and replace a functionally obsolete crossing. Fru-Con Construction is contractor for the bridge which has been designed by Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson; Braun Intertec and Figg Engineering Group. Completion of the US$55 million scheme is due next year.
