Missouri's "practical design" scheme to save US$400 million
Published: June 15, 2005
Missouri Department of Transportation has said that it will save nearly US$400 million over the next five years through the introduction of a new highway design concept. "Practical design" will involve customising projects to fit specific needs rather than applying generic standards across the board. The money saved will be used to fund additional projects. “It's a lot like when you go to buy a car,” said MoDOT director Peter Rahn. “You might like to have leather seats, but cloth will do the job at a lower price. You can then spend the money you saved on something else.” Chief engineer Kevin Keith added that in some cases MoDOT had built features that went above what was needed to address the problem. “For example, why replace an entire bridge if only a new bridge deck is needed,” Keith said. |
