A council meeting next week will consider a proposal for staff to carry out consultation on the scheme and undertake technical analysis. There is currently excess road space on the bridge and the idea is that the centre lanes would be reallocated to create an accessible path.

The work would be carried out in coordination with construction work that has started on rehabilitation and seismic upgrades to the bridge.

The centre design has emerged as the most cost-effective way to close this gap in a way that maintains motor vehicle travel times and reliability.
