A consortium of three construction firms has been selected by Multnomah County to build the new Burnside Bridge in Portland, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest.

The consortium, Burnside Bridge Partners, consists of Stacy and Witbeck, Traylor Bros and American Bridge, which fabricated the original Burnside Bridge.

The Burnside Bridge, completed in 1926, is a bascule bridge over the Willamette River. At present, Portland Oregon has no bridges that could withstand a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. The new bridge will be key to the city’s resilience.

Design work will start in December. Construction is slated for 2026, and the bridge could be opened in 2031. The county is still seeking funding to complete the project (link opens in new tab).
