At the time of the collapse ten workers were using a boom truck to manipulate a side panel of the Malamba Bailey Bridge. The truck was in the middle of the bridge when the structure collapsed, falling 18m into the river, burying seven workers in rubble.

Five bodies were retrieved. Two injured workers were pulled from the site. Police confirm they are recovering in hospital. The other three workers came through unhurt.

City officials are investigating the cause of the collapse. They have required the contractor to retrieve the fallen panels so they can be examined.

The bridge was a project of the local government of Barangay Malamba, Marilog District.

In February 2022 another bridge in the same district also collapsed, injuring two workers. That bridge was a project of the Department of Public Works and Highways.
