Bridge demolition work which required the closure of the M25, the London orbital motorway, was completed ahead of schedule, according to contractor Balfour Beatty.

A new gantry has been installed in the place of the demolished M25 Clearmount Bridge (Balfour Beatty)

The daytime closure is unprecedented in the lifetime of the M25, which opened in 1986. National Highways closed the motorway at 9pm on 15 March until 10pm on 17 March for the work. Contractor Balfour Beatty demolished Clearmount Bridleway Bridge and installed a 128 tonne, 63m gantry.

The work is part of a scheme to improve traffic flow and safety on the motorway’s junction 10 by increasing the number of lanes.

The junction 10 improvement includes the installation of the UK’s first heathland bridge, the Cockcrow Green Bridge, which will connect two areas of heathland habitat to make a wildlife corridor.
