Plans to build the first major new road bridge over the River Thames in 20 years have been approved by the British government.

Funding has been confirmed for Surrey County Council's new arch bridge between Walton and Shepperton. It will replace two temporary bridges in the area.

Work on the US$50 million crossing is due to start next month and is expected to finish by the summer of 2013. The design means that there will be no piers in the water, opening up views along the river and improving navigation for boats.
